From the Big Book of AA, page 426 in my copy (this artist’s favorite paragraph BTW):
“And acceptance is the answer to ALL my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation – some fact of my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as what needs to be change in me and in my attitudes.”
Well. There it is then.
I often teach about acceptance. That’s a tough one, because included in this teaching is the simple truth that if you practice acceptance . . .if you REALLY practice acceptance . . . then you have to accept a lot of “uncomfortable” truths about what happens in your daily life, your family, your job, the mess in the kitchen, this planet.
So, you may justifiably ask, what are you supposed to do about all this?
Well, you accept that you are uncomfortable.
I accept that I do not like this answer.
Thank you for reading this far.
